Quick answer

To create a carousel for Instagram, open the app, tap +, choose Post, tap the select-multiple icon and pick up to 20 photos or slides in the order you want them swiped. Add a caption and tap Share. For a carousel people actually swipe, plan one idea per slide, design every slide at 1080 × 1440 (3:4) or 1080 × 1350 (4:5), and keep the same look on each one. A carousel maker does the design step for you.

  1. 1Plan one idea per slide: a hook, the points, then an ask.
  2. 2Pick the size: 1080 × 1440 (3:4) or 1080 × 1350 (4:5), the same for every slide.
  3. 3Design the slides with the same look on each one.
  4. 4Export the slides as images, in order.
  5. 5In Instagram, tap +, choose Post, tap select multiple, pick up to 20 slides and share.

What is an Instagram carousel?

A carousel is one Instagram post with up to 20 photos or videos that people swipe through (Instagram Help Center). It sits in the feed as a single post, with little dots underneath that say "there's more".

That swipe is the point. A carousel can teach, list or tell a story one step at a time, which is why tips, tutorials, before-and-afters and repurposed threads all live here. It pays off, too: Later's analysis found carousels typically outperform single-image posts on engagement rate by 19%.

Step 1

Plan one idea per slide

Write the carousel before you design anything. Almost every good one follows the same shape: a hook, the points, then an ask.

Slide 1 · The hook

7 mistakes that quietly kill your reach

One promise or question. Its only job is to earn the swipe.

Middle slides · One point each

Mistake #1: Posting with no hook on the cover.

One idea per slide, in as few words as you can.

Last slide · The ask

Save this for your next post. Which one hit home?

Ask for a save, a follow or a comment. Pick one.

Most carousels land between 5 and 10 slides. You can go to 20, but only if every slide still earns its place.

Step 2

Pick the right size

Go tall. 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4) is the tallest shape the feed shows: since May 2025 Instagram displays 3:4 images "exactly as you shot it", carousels included (Social Media Today). 1080 × 1350 (4:5) is the long-standing standard and still takes far more of the screen than a square. More in Instagram carousel size.

Whatever you choose, use the same size for every slide so the carousel looks like one piece.

Step 3

Design the slides

Use the same font, colours, margins and name on every slide, so the post reads as one piece rather than ten. Big text, strong contrast and one focal point per slide. There are three ways to get there:

Instagram or Edits

Best for photo dumps

Pick your photos and post. Instagram's Edits app can put a carousel together too. Neither is built for text slides.

Canva or Figma

Best for custom, photo-heavy designs

Full control and lots of templates. You set up the pages and line up the text on every slide yourself.

LightFit Studios

Best for text carousels: tips, threads, quotes

Type or paste your words. Every slide comes out the same size, in your name, with nothing to line up.

Doing a seamless carousel in Canva or Figma, where one picture runs across every slide? Make one wide canvas and slice it into equal 1080px pieces. For text carousels, LightFit's tweet-style carousel maker skips the lining up entirely. Still choosing? See the best carousel makers or a simpler Canva alternative for carousels.

Step 4

Export your slides

Export every slide as a PNG (sharpest for text) or a JPG, and number them so the order is obvious. Then flick through them on your phone before you post: that's where your audience will see them.

LightFit exports each slide as a PNG, 1170px wide. With lifetime access you can send the slides to your own inbox, so they're on your phone and ready to go.

Step 5

  1. 1

    Tap + and choose Post

Open Instagram and start a new post.

  2. 2

    Tap the select-multiple icon

It sits above your camera roll and lets you pick more than one image.

  3. 3

    Tap your slides in order

The number on each one is its place in the carousel. You can pick up to 20.

  4. 4

Tap Next and check the order

Edit or reorder slides if you need to, and add music if you like.

  5. 5

    Write your caption

Tag people, and add alt text for each image in the advanced settings.

  6. 6

    Tap Share

On a computer? Go to instagram.com, click Create, drag in your images, then use the select-multiple icon to add the rest and set the order.

Tips for more swipes and saves

Give slide 1 one job

Earn the swipe. A cover with only a logo or a title wastes the most-seen slide you have.

Show there is more

An arrow or a "swipe" on slide 1 tells people the post keeps going.

Make slide 2 a second hook

People who scrolled past can be shown the post again from slide 2, so it should stand on its own.

Caption it like a summary

Sum the carousel up in a line and end on a question, so the post works before anyone swipes.

Post it more than once

The same slides work on Threads and as a LinkedIn multi-image post.

Recycle your best threads

A thread that did well is a carousel waiting to happen.

Make one in LightFit

Open the studio and type your hook on slide 1. Add a slide for each point after it. Set your name, handle and photo once, and they appear on every slide. Keep the 4:5 ratio, pick a preset or switch to Night, then export all the slides and post them with the steps above.

  • Instagram carousel slide 2 in dark mode, 4:5 portrait
  • Instagram carousel slide 3, same look on every slide

Lifetime access is $100 once: up to 20 slides, every ratio and unlimited exports.

FAQ

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

Up to 20 photos and videos in one post, according to Instagram's Help Center. Carousel ads are limited to 10 cards.

What size should Instagram carousel slides be?

1080 × 1440 (3:4) is the tallest shape Instagram shows, supported since May 2025. 1080 × 1350 (4:5) also works and fills more of the feed than a square, and 1080 × 1080 is the square option. Keep every slide the same size.

How do I make a carousel on Instagram without Canva?

Use a carousel maker built for it. In LightFit Studios you type or paste your words, every slide comes out in your name at 4:5, and you export PNG slides ready to post.

Can I make an Instagram carousel on a computer?

Yes. Design the slides in a browser tool, then post from instagram.com with Create and select multiple, or send the images to your phone and post from the app.

Can I add slides to a carousel after posting?

You can't add new slides once it is posted. Since March 2026 you can reorder the slides, and you can delete one from a carousel of three or more.

Are carousels better than Reels?

They do different jobs. Reels reach new people; carousels get saved and shared because people can swipe through them and come back. Most accounts post both.

Can I turn a thread into an Instagram carousel?

Yes. Put one post on each slide at 4:5 and upload them in order. Our X-thread guide walks through it.

What does LightFit cost?

$100 once for lifetime access: unlimited exports, up to 20 slides and every ratio. Nothing renews, and there's a full refund within 14 days.

Write the points. Let the studio do the slides.
