Quick answer

Of ten popular carousel claims we checked, one fully holds up (Instagram often shows a carousel twice), four are outdated or unsupported (the 10-slide limit in the app, "5 to 7 slides is best", "4:5 is the tallest size", "you can't fix a carousel after posting"), four are overstated or contested (carousels out-reach Reels, open loops, hashtags, posting time), and one, "1.4x more reach and 3.1x more engagement", had no primary source we could trace.

How to spot a carousel myth yourself

  • No sample, no period, no metric: treat it as an opinion.
  • Credited to a big brand without a link: follow it. Twice in this list the trail went nowhere.
  • A study from before 2024: Instagram's limits and ranking have changed since (20 slides; Reels treatment).
  • "Studies show" with one number: look for the study that disagrees. On reach, there usually is one.

Start from what holds up: the science of carousels, then write the carousel. The studio does the slides.

FAQ

Is the Instagram carousel limit 10 or 20?

20 in the Instagram app. Carousels published through Meta's API, which scheduling tools use, are limited to 10.

Where does "1.4x more reach, 3.1x more engagement" come from?

We could not find out. It is credited to Sprout Social and to Hootsuite on different sites, but Sprout's carousel guide does not contain it and the Hootsuite credit has no link.

What is the tallest Instagram carousel size?

3:4, or 1080 by 1440 pixels. Instagram added native 3:4 support for photos and carousels in May 2025, which is taller than 4:5.

Can you edit a carousel after posting?

Partly. Since March 2026 you can reorder slides, and you can delete a slide from a post with at least three. You cannot add new slides.

Do carousels really get shown twice?

Yes. Adam Mosseri has said Instagram often gives a carousel a second chance by moving to its second slide for people who did not swipe.

Write the words. The studio makes the slides.
