How many slides should a carousel have?

Plenty of guides still say 5 to 7 slides. The biggest study yet says longer carousels win. Here is what the data shows, the myth about a 10-slide limit, and a rule that gives you the right number for any post.

Quick answer

More than you think. Instagram allows up to 20 slides, and in Eden's 2026 carousel study of 655,385 carousels, 18 to 20 slides did 13 to 15% better than each creator's usual post while 2 to 7 slides did no better than usual. Use one hook, one slide per idea, a summary and an ask, and do not cut a carousel short if every slide earns its swipe.

The rule: hook + ideas + ask

1 hook + 1 slide per idea + 1 summary (for lists) + 1 ask

A "7 mistakes" carousel is 1 + 7 + 1 + 1 = 10 slides. A story with three beats is 1 + 3 + 1 = 5. The number falls out of the content; you never pick it first.

What Eden's study of 655,385 carousels found at each length · breakout rate*

2 to 7: about the same as usualScheduling tools stop at 10Instagram's limit, 20

Eden reported a 28.8% breakout rate at 10 slides, up from 23.4% at 3.

*Share of carousels that got at least twice their creator's usual likes, August 2025 to August 2026. Only the lengths Eden published are drawn; nothing in between is estimated. The dashed line is Meta's 10-slide API limit; the solid one is Instagram's 20.

The rule keeps you honest. And the data below says you should not be afraid of where it leads, even past 10.

*Share of carousels that got at least twice their creator's usual likes. Source: Eden's 2026 carousel study, 655,385 carousels from 12,159 creators, August 2025 to August 2026. It held at every account size: under 10K followers, 11 to 20 slides broke out 23.5% of the time against 18.0% for 2 to 4.

Two honest caveats from the study itself. It measures likes, not saves or shares, and it is observational: people who make 18-slide carousels may simply put more work in. Read it as "longer carousels that are worth reading do better", not "add slides".

It is not the only study that points this way. Socialinsider's 2020 carousel study, via Search Engine Journal looked at nearly 3 million carousels when the limit was 10: engagement dipped after three slides, rose again from eight, and 10-slide carousels had the highest rate. Two studies, six years apart, same direction.

We checked 9 popular guides: almost none cite data

On 19 October 2026 we read nine guides that rank for "how many slides should an Instagram carousel have" and logged what each recommends and on what evidence.

When to go longer (and when not to)

Long carousels work when each slide pays off on its own: a tutorial where every step matters, a list where every point is real. They fail when slides repeat, explain, or pad. A padded 20 loses to a tight 8.

Keep the end close. A carousel that feels short to finish gets finished, which is the goal-gradient effect doing your work for you.

The limits on each platform

  • Instagram: up to 20 photos and videos in one post (Instagram Help Center).
  • Threads: up to 20 photos in one carousel, and photos cannot be mixed with videos (Publer's Threads guide).
  • LinkedIn: post the images as a multi-image post, or share a PDF, Word or PowerPoint file as a document post that readers page through (Social Media Examiner).

LightFit makes carousels of up to 20 slides in every ratio, so the count is up to your content. See how it works.

FAQ

What is the maximum number of slides in an Instagram carousel?

20 photos and videos in one post, according to Instagram's Help Center.

Is a 10-slide carousel too long?

No. In Eden's 2026 study, carousels kept doing better past 10 slides, peaking around 18 to 20. Length only hurts when slides repeat or pad.

Is the Instagram carousel limit 10 or 20?

20 in the Instagram app, according to Instagram's Help Center. Carousels published through Meta's API, which scheduling tools use, are still limited to 10.

Do longer carousels get more likes?

In Eden's study of 655,385 carousels, 18 to 20 slides did 13 to 15% better than each creator's usual post, while 2 to 7 slides did no better. The study measures likes and cannot prove cause.

Should I post carousels or Reels?

Both do different jobs. Carousels lead on engagement rate and saves in 2025 data, Reels on comments. The full comparison is in carousels vs Reels.
